Liverpool news: Lijnders wants to sign Reds star as club fired Alexander-Arnold warning

Liverpool are preparing for life under Arne Slot after making it through Jurgen Klopp’s emotional farewell on Sunday.

Slot has now been officially confirmed as the next Liverpool manager and he faces a difficult task to fill the shoes of Klopp, who has been in charge for eight and a half years. Klopp is departing alongside his coaching staff and there will be a fresh feeling at the club this summer.

The Dutchman has been appointed by Fenway Sports Group chief Michael Edwards and the new Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes. They will now be busy playing for the summer transfer window, with Slot no doubt wanting to have a say on recruitment.

For many of the players, thoughts are now turning to Euro 2024 and the Copa America. So, with that in mind, here are the latest headlines from Mirror Football.

Lijnders wants Bradley

Klopp is departing alongside his assistant manager Pep Lijnders, who has since taken the job at Red Bull Salzburg. The Dutchman has been a key figure during the Klopp era and deserves lots of credit for bringing through Liverpool’s academy players.

He is very proud of his work – and has joked about bringing Conor Bradley with him to Austria. In an interview with The Redmen TV, Lijnders said: “I believed really in Conor Bradley, and Jarell [Quansah] and Caoimhin Kelleher, and Harvey Elliott, and Curtis [Jones].

“But Conor, what is he doing here? Conor Bradley? What did he do? We have a new right defender, you don’t need to buy anyone. He can come to Salzburg immediately, by the way. I have a lot but I don’t have money. I have money but now you have Michael Edwards in charge!”

Nunez opens up

Darwin Nunez has explained why he deleted all of the Liverpool-related posts on Instagram. Nunez sparked rumours of a possible summer transfer after the move on social media earlier this month.

The Uruguay international has now explained his thought process, admitting that the trolls had got to him. “From the moment you start playing and until you retire, there will always be someone who will criticise you,” he told Por la Jersey via ESPN Uruguay. “Before, I did look at them a lot and it affected me. Whoever says that those negative comments do not affect them is lying, those negative comments that are directed towards you will always affect you.

“They tell me everything, but I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me. I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I'm not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family. When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it's already happened, and there is always revenge.”

Keane savages Alexander-Arnold

Roy Keane has criticised Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, claiming he “can’t defend”, after he was included in the England squad for Euro 2024. Alexander-Arnold is expected to play in central midfield for the Three Lions this summer, but Keane isn’t having it.

He said on the Stick to Football podcast: “You can’t play him in there [midfield] against one of the top teams. In one or two of the group matches you get away with it, but if you play Trent in there against one of the top nations, defensive side of the game we are talking about, he can’t defend.

“I think [Declan] Rice has got enough about him, he’s played a lot of games, I’d have no problem of Rice as your option, the sitting role. I’d still be worried as a two [man midfield] - I think Trent against the real top teams – the French or Germany, whatever it might be, in the knock-out games, if you are playing Trent in there [centre midfield], defensively – he can’t defend! In midfield, you have to defend in midfield.”
