Voters kick all the Republican women out of the South Carolina Senate
This may be the last time I get to come up here, which is kind of sad. Which one of you will step up to the plate and take over what I've been doing for the last 12 years? South Carolina Senate is about to lose its only three Republican women. Republican primary voters booted all three women, Senator Sandy, Sen Penry Gustafson and Katrina Shealy, who took on their party to stop a total abortion ban from passing in South Carolina last year. They were part of the sister senators that included two Democrats who joined them in opposing the ban. I've read billboards that said I was a baby killer. I would never hurt. Child, you know, the one thing I did was I was looking out for women. I was looking out for girls and you know, the future of South Carolina. Their vote against the ban attracted international media attention, but it also brought on the ire of those against abortion. When you're on CNN and you're on MSNBC and you're on the front page of the New York Times and the front page of the Washington Post, you're repeatedly sticking your finger in the eye of a lot of conservative folks. All five of the sister senators received the John F Kennedy Profile in Courage Award last year. For people who risk their careers for the greater good. We weren't allowed to bring our profile and Courage Award. The chamber because it's too controversial, but here it is and it's beautiful and I'm proud of it. And all of these sister senators here with me. We're not ashamed to be called sister senators. We're not ashamed of anything we did. Now, there will likely be only two women, both Democrats, in the 46 member Senate, barring a major upset in November's election. That's the least of any US state. No matter how much empathy men can have, You know, they've not had babies and not had they have a hysterectomy. They haven't had some of the healthcare issues or even community issues that we we deal with every day. Women, Somebody else is going to have to stand up. Somebody else is going to have to come and, and make things right. There's nothing anybody can do to hurt me now. So, you know, take a look. This is what a sentencing cost. And I'm, I'm proud of it. So somebody better do the job. I'm leaving.
