Yamal in numbers: Barca star is making more history at Euro 2024
Lamine Yamal put in another dazzling show for Spain as La Roja cruised past Georgia at Euro 2024 and into a quarter-final tie with Germany.
Barcelona’s wonderkid started the game - becoming the youngest player ever do so in a knock out game at a European Championship.
The teenager also went on to pick up an assist with a simply gorgeous ball for Fabian Ruiz to score. That’s now two in the tournament for the 16-year-old, who has only just passed his school exams, and nobody has more so far at Euro 2024.
Yamal didn’t just grab an assist, he basically tormented Georgia all night long with a fabulous display on the right of the attack. In fact the only thing that was missing was a goal, although it wasn’t for a lack of effort.
Barca’s teenager ended up with seven shots and six chances created against Georgia. Opta showed how those numbers are even better than France legend Zinedine Zidane.
But Yamal has shone all tournament long, not just against Georgia. In fact he’s the only player to get into double figures when it comes to creating chances and take-ons at the tournament in Germany.
And now another test awaits Lamine as Spain set up a quarter-final against hosts Germany and team-mate Ilkay Gundogan.
The Germany captain has already piled the praise on Yamal at the tournament, telling The Athletic.
“He is just 16 but it’s crazy. Simply crazy. The confidence he plays with makes it seem so normal… but to perform at a top level throughout the year, and come to the Euros being a key player is not normal at that age,” he told The Athletic.
“He is very humble, coming from a humble family. He is a very nice guy. I could not praise him more. I wish for him to stay healthy and get to the very top of world football, because that’s his potential.”
Friday’s encounter promises to be a classic as the two best teams in the tournament so far meet with a semi-final spot up for grabs.
