Elton John rallies luvvies in support for Keir Starmer's Labour

  •  Sir Elton and husband David Furnish said music industry had only 'one choice'
  •  The iconic musician and Labour supporter has been a persistent critic of Brexit
  •  He joins list of celebrity supporters, including Damien Hirst and James Norton

Sir Elton John took a swipe at Brexit yesterday as he became the latest member of the liberal arts establishment to back Labour.

The multi-millionaire singer and his husband David Furnish endorsed Labour, saying there was only 'one choice' for those wanting to support the music industry.

Sir Elton has been a persistent critic of Brexit, once saying he was 'ashamed of my country for what it has done'.

Last year, Labour said it would explore his demand for musicians to be given visa-free travel to make it easier for them to tour in Europe.

In a video message played out to a pre-election party attended by Sir Keir Starmer and wife Victoria at the weekend, Sir Elton said he was 'backing Keir and Labour to win this election'.

He added: 'There is only one choice. Let's help artists cut through the red tape that prevents them from thriving and contributing to this country's future success.'

The superstar joins a long list of celebrity artists endorsing Labour in recent months, including Britain's richest artist Damien Hirst and privately-educated actor James Norton.

Singer Beverley Knight, Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden and actor Kit Harington were among those to sprinkle stardust on the event for Labour supporters on Saturday, which the party insisted was not a victory rally.

Labour has also received the backing of billionaires John Caudwell and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

In a scathing response, Rishi Sunak said: 'They are two of Britain's richest men, they can probably afford Labour's tax rises, but for tens of millions of people who are working really hard, they can't.'
