International Round-Up: Copa Ámerica In Full Swing
As the Euros took a two day break after the completion of the group stages of the competition, across the world, the Copa Ámerica is heating up. Three Liverpool players are representing their countries in the US this summer, and all of them are doing well in these first two round robin games.
Darwin Núñez is the talk of the town, making a big impression on the early stages of this competition for Uruguay. The Liverpool man has scored in both of the opening two games, helping put his team at the top of the table and all but guaranteeing them a spot in the quarterfinals. Their 5-0 win over Bolivia ballooned their goal differential to +7 after only two matches. The US, who are in second place with three points, are at +1. The two teams are meeting for the final match on Monday evening.
In group D, Luis Díaz and Alisson Becker are competing against one another. Díaz opened scoring with a penalty in Colombia’s 3-0 win against Costa Rica on Friday evening. An opening victory against Paraguay means that Colombia sit atop the group with six points and have already secured their advancement to the quarterfinals.
Below them and nipping at their heels is Alisson’s Brazil. A disappointing 0-0 draw against Costa Rica on their opening day was not the emphatic start to the campaign that they hoped for. However, they made up for it against Paraguay on Friday, notching a 4-1 victory and garnering four points so far. The battle for first place will come on Tuesday, when the two Liverpool players will face each other to see out the group stages. On paper, Brazil could still miss out on the knockout stages, but they are currently three points and six goals ahead of Costa Rica.
