Seemingly imminent new signing Michael Olise might lead to Leroy Sané playing on the left at Bayern Munich
While so many of Bayern Munich’s highest paid players are linked with moves away from the club amid reports of the club wanting to reduce the wage bill, the absence of Leroy Sané’s name on the sell list left many fans, angered by his inconsistencies over the past years, scratching their heads. When multiple reliable news outlets then suddenly reported that Michael Olise would join the club from Crystal Palace, it was not hard to see how Michael Olise’s skillset overlaps with Sané’s. After all, both are left footed, creative winger who prefer to play on the right. Ergo, it would seem that Sane’s services would be slightly redundant.
But that is not the case. As reported by Kerry Hau, and captured by @iMiaSanMia, “Bayern are still planning with Leroy Sané and want to extend his contract, even after signing Michael Olise. Vincent Kompany has full confidence in his former [Manchester] City teammate.”
It truly is a big indication of trust in Sané, but if Olise is to retain his spot in his favored position on the right flank, where would the former Schalke player line up? Hau may have an answer: “There’s a consideration to play Sané on the left wing, like he used to play at Manchester City.”
We have seen former Bayern Munich coaches experiment with Sané’s position before, with Julian Nagelsmann moving him into a central position and Thomas Tuchel playing him on the left, like Hau suggests Kompany might try. But every time, he ended up back on the right flank. It could be that history will repeat itself yet again.
