England will play Slovakia in the Euro 2024 round of 16 on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate’s side topped Group C despite recording underwhelming draws against Denmark and Slovenia after winning their opener against Serbia.

Phil Foden is due to return to the England camp after his partner gave birth to a baby boy, while Luke Shaw has also given Southgate a boost by declaring he will be back from his hamstring injury to play a part in the last-16 tie.

Slovakia were confirmed as England’s opponents upon the conclusion of the group stages on Wednesday night.

Francesco Calzona’s team finished on four points in Group E, where a 1-0 win against Belgium and 2-1 defeat to Ukraine was followed by Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Romania.

Slovakia are 45th in the Fifa world rankings – 40 spots below England. England won 2-1 at Wembley in the last meeting between the sides in September 2017 during qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

The reverse fixture, in September 2016, was a 1-0 England victory in Sam Allardyce’s only game in charge of the national team.

When is England’s next game?

England will play in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on June 30.

Where is England’s next game being played?

The match will be played in Gelsenkirchen at the Arena AufSchalke, which is home to Bundesliga 2 club Schalke. England have already played at this stadium in the Euros, beating Serbia 1-0 in the opening game.

What TV channel is it on?

It will be broadcast live on ITV1 with coverage starting at 3.30pm. Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Gary Neville and Karen Carney are among ITV’s pundits for the tournament.

Foden to return to camp after birth of baby boy

Phil Foden is due to return to England’s Euro 2024 camp in Germany on Thursday night after his partner gave birth to a baby boy.

That will leave manager Gareth Southgate a decision over whether or not to keep Foden in his team for Sunday’s round of 16 match with Slovakia.

Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is in line to start his first game of the Euros after an impressive performance as a substitute in the draw with Slovenia.

But Southgate must decide whether or not Foden will be fully prepared for Sunday, having been away from camp for almost two days.

England midfielder Foden returned home for the birth of his third child straight after the draw with Slovenia.

He was still absent for Thursday’s training session in Blankenhain, but is due to fly back in time to train on Friday.

Midfielder Declan Rice did not train with the England group on Thursday, along with Kieran Trippier, who has been managing a slight calf issue. The pair did individual work inside.

Rice is believed to have simply been given a rest day and the expectation is that he will be fit to start again against Slovakia.

Southgate will also hope that Trippier, who has been standing in at left-back can return, even though Luke Shaw again trained with the squad.

Shaw has not played a game since February and starting him against Slovakia would be viewed as a risk. Trippier was taken off late in the Slovenia game with Kyle Walker finishing at left-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold coming on at right-back.

Mainoo replaced Conor Gallagher at half-time against Slovenia and helped England to improve after the break. The 19-year-old is now in line to be handed his first major tournament start for England.

Southgate has so far tried Alexander-Arnold and Gallagher next to Rice in the centre of his England midfield.

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has confirmed that he would be happy to be used as an emergency left-back by Southgate if needed.

“I’ve given it a go,” said Konsa. “At Charlton, I played there a couple of times, but then I played at left-back, right-back, centre-back, all across the back four. I’m more than happy to do it. Obviously left-back is a bit different, but wherever the gaffer wants to put me I’ll try my best and give it my all.”

Asked if his versatility was key to him being included in Southgate’s 26-man squad, Konsa added: “Definitely. It’s also important that as a player, in modern football – like with Manchester City, you see the centre-halves play left-back, right-back and it’s something that is happening more and more often. For me, it’s something I’ve done my whole career and I’m happy to do it.

“Obviously, like everyone, I want to play. If and when my time comes I’ll be ready, but I’ve enjoyed the experience so far. It’s my first major tournament and, hopefully, it won’t be the first and last one.”

What sort of team are Slovakia?

Slovakia made it to the knockout stages as one of the four best third-placed sides. They finished behind Romania and Belgium in Group E, where all teams finished on four points.

Slovakia’s first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will be well known to England’s Anthony Gordon, who is pushing for a start in Gelsenkirchen.

Slovakia have never beaten England in six attempts, with five losses and one draw.

What are the odds?

  • England to win: 3/7
  • Slovakia to win: 9/1
