Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu will begin injury rehab assignment

New York Yankees third baseman DJ LeMahieu is expected to begin a rehab assignment this week as he works his way back from a foot fracture.

LeMahieu, who started the season on the 10-day injured list, could begin his rehab assignment as early as Thursday, according to Meredith Marakovitz of YES Network.

LeMahieu suffered a non-displaced fracture when he fouled a ball off of his right foot during Spring Training. He’s been able to do some running, fielding and hitting in the meantime, and it appears he’s just about ready to get some game action in.

Earlier this week, manager Aaron Boone believed the third baseman was close to starting a rehab assignment, but he also wasn’t sure how many games he would need to get up to game speed.

“He seems close, to me, to being able to get into some rehab games,” Boone told reporters last week. “Hopefully that’s coming soon. … I know he’s starting to [champ] at the bit a little bit to be ready to go in some games. It’s been encouraging his last couple weeks.”

While LeMahieu has been working his way back, the Yankees have been relying on a combination of Oswaldo Cabrera and Jon Berti at third base. The latter, though, was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier in the week due to a groin strain.

Cabrera, on the other hand, has enjoyed an incredible start to the season. The 25-year-old is hitting .292 with an .867 OPS to go along with three home runs, 12 RBI and nine walks.
