Top-seeded Mapua Cardinals blow past Benilde to reach NCAA Finals
By ANGELO JACINTO
PAOLO Hernandez rediscovered his touch while Clint Escamis remained in top form as Mapua booked the first ticket to the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball finals after outlasting College of St. Benilde 78-68 last Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Hernandez scored 11 points in the pay-off period, spearheading a late 14-2 rally that finally took the fight out of the Blazers after a tightly contested first 36 minutes.
The win sent the Cardinals back to the finals two seasons after their showdown with the Letran Knights in the NCAA Season 97 finals, marking an impressive bounce back from a forgettable Season 98 which saw them win just seven games.
Now they await the winner of the match between the second-seeded Lyceum and San Beda on who they’ll face in this season’s championship.
