Arsenal are on the brink of signing Rangers wonderkid Alexander Smith, according to reports.

The 15-year-old attacking midfielder has been tracked by Arsenal for some time and the Gunners are set to offer a six-figure compensation fee for his services.

That’s according to The Sun, with reports that the north Londoners are closing in on a deal for Smith, who has been capped by both USA U15s and Scotland U16s.

Smith, who was born in Scotland but holds dual citizenship and can represent the USA, recently impressed for Rangers’ youth team at the East Mallorca Cup.

He picked up four Man of the Match awards over five games at the Spanish tournament, which included a victory over Liverpool.

Scotland has become a big market for English clubs to recruit young talent given that they cannot sign players under the age of 18 from overseas due to Brexit.

Rangers are reluctant to lose Smith given his glowing reputation in Glasgow but are unlikely to hold on to their young talent.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has strong connections to Rangers having played for the Scottish club between 2002 and 2004.

The Spaniard spoke very highly of his time in Glasgow in an interview with the Rangers Museum last year.

‘I loved Glasgow, I always recommend it to people to move there if they have the chance,’ Arteta said. ‘They will be surprised. It’s hard to find people as passionate as loyal and as open as the people in Scotland and Glasgow in particular. I always felt very welcome and I had the support behind me. I had a great time there.’
