Jim Chalmers receives ‘backbench pressure’ to tackle cost of living

Tasmanian MP Brian Mitchell asked whether the backbench would get a say regarding the mid-year economic statement set to be delivered by Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

“The clear implication from his comments was ‘are the government going to do something? Do a Christmas measure on the cost of living’,” Mr Clennell said.

Mr Chalmers agreed to hold a meeting later this week with Finance Minister Katy Gallagher and backbenchers to discuss the economic statement.

“The first sign of a bit of backbench pressure with this meeting being lined up with the Treasurer on the cost of living issue,” Mr Clennell said.
