Which teams will pick a QB in the 2024 NFL Draft? Bears, Vikings among locks; Seahawks, Ravens top sleepers

The 2024 NFL Draft is not likely to match the record 14 quarterbacks selected through all seven rounds in 2023, but there’s a good chance 10-12 QBs come off the board on April 25-27 of this year.

Although some of the teams who took a QB at some point in ’23 will need to go back to the well in the upcoming draft, several more teams will decide to address football’s most important position, too.

From the Bears to the 49ers, here’s a tiered breakdown of the teams most likely teams to pick a quarterback, starting with the locks.

Chicago Bears

The Bears are hoping the third time is the charm in the first round to find a franchise QB, with Caleb Williams set to go No. 1 overall after neither Justin Fields nor Mitchell Trubisky was the answer.

Washington Commanders

The Commanders would have loved to take a shot on the D.C.-native Williams, but they are now leaning toward another dynamic Heisman winner, Jayden Daniels. Whether they select him or Drake Maye, they will definitely be walking away with a new signal-caller.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings moved on from Kirk Cousins and are ready to make their power move for his strong-armed replacement, either J.J. McCarthy or Drake Maye.

New England Patriots

Some might think they would go against conventional wisdom after giving up on Mac Jones, but they should select Maye or Daniels, whoever the Commanders don’t take. Even if New England trades out of No. 3, they’re a lock to draft a QB at some point in the draft.

Denver Broncos

They moved on from Russell Wilson and Jarrett Stidham is the shakiest of bridges for Sean Payton. The ideal target for Sean Payton seems to be Bo Nix, but they will be addressing the position on Day 1 or Day 2.

NEAR-LOCKS

Las Vegas Raiders

There’s a small chance sit on a combination of second-year QB Aidan O’Connell and new bridge option Gardner Minshew, but it seems likely they’ll get a developmental QB at some point. They’ve been attached most to Michael Penix Jr..

New York Giants

The Giants’ rumors have been as nuts as taking McCarthy early and as reasonable as picking Spencer Rattler on Day 2. Either way, plenty of reason to think they want an alternative to Daniel Jones and Drew Lock.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams aren’t looking at Stetson Bennett to be groomed behind Matthew Stafford, and Jimmy Garoppolo is just a fading backup. They also can be in the mix for Penix early or a flier later.

New York Jets

Aaron Rodgers is 40 and journeyman Tyrod Taylor was their big veteran upgrade in the offseason. They haven’t moved Zach Wilson yet, but he’s not in their long-term plans after Rodgers hangs it up. A third- or fourth-round QB makes sense as a stash.

SLEEPERS

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks traded for Sam Howell to replace Lock behind Geno Smith, but they have a need for a developmental No. 3. Rattler would be the top target there, but don’t rule out Penix reuniting with offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb in a trade-down or trade-up scenario.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers just extended Baker Mayfield, but they don’t have more than young backup material behind him in Kyle Trask and John Wolford.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens didn’t re-sign Tyler Huntley as Lamar Jackson’s ace backup, and now their depth chart features 37-year-old Josh Johnson and 25-year-old project Malik Cunningham. They could take a flier on banged-up FSU star Jordan Travis.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints took Jake Haener behind Derek Carr in last year’s draft. Behind Carr now it’s also Taysom Hill, Nathan Peterman, and Kellen Mond. That’s some kind of volume, but they can’t be ruled out to take another shot.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons got Cousins to start and still have Taylor Heinicke behind him after trading Desmond Ridder. That doesn’t mean they don’t have room for a developmental project in Zac Robinson’s Rams-like offense given Cousins turns 36 in August. Tulane’s Michael Pratt could fit the bill here in the middle rounds.

Green Bay Packers

Jordan Love has proved to be a worthy successor to Rodgers, but his top backup is second-year fifth-rounder Sean Clifford. Alex McGough still hanging around as the No. 3. Similar to the Saints, they could be thinking QB again.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts can’t wait to get a full season out of Anthony Richardson, but his top backup is 39-year-old Joe Flacco with Sam Ehlinger holding on as the No. 3. They might want to consider a Richardson-styled dual-threat option late.

San Francisco 49ers

Remember when Brock Purdy seemed like a deep developmental pick as Mr. Irrelevant in 2022? Since his meteroic rise, teams have been more mindful about taking calculated QB shots late. With Josh Dobbs and Brandon Allen behind Purdy now, the 49ers just might jump on a Day 3 trend they started if Kyle Shanahan finds an intriguing enough passer ideal for his system.
