When will it get warmer? UK weather forecast as high pressure arrives this weekend

Wet weather and lows of under 10°C hit the UK after the weekend brought warm dry weather and the hottest day of the year.

On Monday, Britons were alerted of a possible tornado as thunderstorm warnings were issued to areas of the country.

And on Wednesday, lows will reach 6.7°C in Fair Isle, just days after a high of 21.8°C was recorded in Essex, on Saturday.

When will it get warmer?

Two days of wet weather and cool temperatures will make way for milder temperatures and sun towards the end of this week, as high pressure creeps into England bringing some of the warmer spring weather we have seen.

The Met Office said: “This week sees an improving picture, with high pressure becoming increasingly dominant over the weekend and bringing dry, more settled conditions for many.

“The change does happen slowly though. Wednesday sees a chilly start, with a warm front bringing showers to north-eastern and eastern areas.”

On Friday, the colder conditions expected this week are likely to make way for milder, brighter weather for many.

“Friday sees that cold front clearing, with clouds and outbreaks of rain subsiding and bringing a mostly fine day to many, with average temperatures,” the Met Office said.

However, the East may continue to see more of the cooler trends and showers experienced throughout the week.

“While high pressure is likely to stay close to the UK next week, it is expected to drift west, and this could allow some cooler weather and showers back into some eastern areas especially” the Met Office added.

What is the latest UK forecast?

Wednesday will be a “showery day for some”, although less windy than Tuesday with some gusts.

Sunny spells may appear with temperatures “near normal or a little below average” as clouds will break up in places.

However, much of Scotland will remain cold, with some wintry showers dusting the high points of the highlands and some likely to have woken up to “a rural frost in places”.

Showers are expected in north-eastern and eastern areas through the morning and into the afternoon, after which the cloud will build once again.

Four flood warnings are in place in the Bourne Valley, South Winterbourne, Cranborne Chase in West Hampshire and East Hayling at Northney, Tye and Selsmore, with a further 59 alerts across the country.

There will be showers in some places, but elsewhere things stay dry, cloudy and rather cool, with temperatures at 10-11°C for the majority.

On Thursday, more low pressure will move in from the north, bringing “some longer spells of rain and windy conditions” to northern areas.

However the South and South West will stay drier with some sunshine as heavy blustery showers continue down the east, where it will be still fairly breezy.

Elsewhere, winds will be lighter and conditions will be mostly dry with some sunny spells and there will be some patchy rain and drizzle arriving in Northern Ireland.

Rain and drizzle sink into Wales and the far South West, with showers mostly easing elsewhere.

Settled conditions will develop from Friday with some sunny spells, especially in the West. Temperatures will slowly increase for many although cloudy and cool temperatures are likely on the east coast.
