However, the 35-year-old AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP is still on bed rest and is expected to return to India after Vitrectomy.

Last week, Delhi minister Saurab Bharadwaj announced that Chadha had traveled to the United Kingdom for urgent medical treatment. “Raghav Chadha has undergone a major eye surgery in the UK. It is said that his condition was serious and there was a possibility of blindness. As soon as he gets better, he will come back to India and join us in the election campaigning,” he said.

Raghav Chadha is recovering

According to news reports, Raghav has been discharged from the hospital and is on bed rest.

However, he is avoiding stepping out or going in sunlight and is under supervision for eye tests and checkups.

PTI reported that Raghav underwent vitrectomy – an eye surgery to treat various problems with the retina and vitreous. During the surgery, the surgeon removes the vitreous and replaces it with another solution.

Vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the middle portion of your eye.

Doctors say your vitreous should be clear so that light can pass through your eye and reach your retina. However, many issues can lead to blood and debris blocking this light. Scar tissue in your vitreous can also displace or tear your retina, leading to impaired vision.

Surgeons sometimes do vitrectomy for a detached retina. Removing the vitreous gives better access to your retina and decreases the tension on your retina.

Experts say the kind of vitrectomy you would have depends on the diseased part of your eye.

Anterior vitrectomy

This may be needed if you have vitreous leakage in the front part of your eye – iris and lens. A retina specialist can do a pars plana vitrectomy on the posterior chamber of your eye.

Posterior pars plana vitrectomy

A posterior pars plana vitrectomy treats conditions that affect the back part of your eye which contains your retina, retinal pigment epithelium, choroid, and sclera.

Diabetic retinopathy
Retinal detachment

According to experts, these can lead to vision loss and, if not treated in time, some can even result in permanent blindness. In some cases, vitrectomy can also restore lost vision.

Complications of the surgery

Doctors say vitrectomy can be a life-changing procedure for many patients as it comes with its share of potential complications, which include:

Infection

It is rare but a serious issue and requires prompt medical attention

Cataract formation

More common in older patients, it may also require additional surgery

Retinal detachment

A new detachment or worsening of existing detachment is also possible

Increased intraocular pressure

This leads to the formation of glaucoma, requiring further treatment

Temporary vision impairment

It can happen due to gas or silicone oil
