Report: Broncos getting trade calls about Courtland Sutton

The Denver Broncos have received “multiple trade inquiries” about wide receiver Courtland Sutton, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Despite the apparent interest from other clubs, the Broncos “do not plan to trade Sutton,” according to Fowler. The 28-year-old receiver is skipping the team’s voluntary workout program as he seeks a new contract.

Denver general manager George Paton downplayed Sutton’s absence during his pre-draft press conference last week.

“I mean, it’s 100 percent voluntary,” Paton said. “It’s the first week of the offseason program. Sean has talked to Courtland; I’ve talked to Courtland. He’s in a good place, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Sutton is set to have base salaries of $13 million in 2024 and $13.5 million in 2025. He has $2 million guaranteed this year, but there’s no guaranteed money in his contract for next season.

If we take Fowler’s report at face value, it suggests that teams have seen Sutton is discontent and are now attempting to acquire a distressed asset (it only cost the Cleveland Browns fifth- and sixth-round picks to trade for Jerry Jeudy). We also know that at least one team tried to trade for Sutton in 2023.

A skeptic could speculate that Denver wants to trade Sutton and the team put out this report with hopes of driving up the asking price. That would just be speculation, but it can’t be ruled out as a possibility.

Broncos Wire put together a list of eight teams who would make sense as potential trade partners for Sutton. The 2024 NFL draft will be held next week (April 25-27) and Denver does not currently hold a second-round pick. If the Broncos do trade Sutton, the draft would be a likely time for it to happen.
