Snow is forecast for Essex on Monday (January 8)

Parts of Essex are predicted to receive snowfall on Monday morning (January 8). Forecasters at the Met Office say that several areas across the county could have snow on the ground, including some areas that might have more than a light dusting.

Forecasts at the Met Office predict large parts of Essex will be hit by snow on Monday morning (January 8). Some parts could even receive ‘heavy snow’.

It comes as the Met Office and UK Health Security Agency continue to have a yellow cold alert covering Essex. They say there is potential for “significant impacts” across the health and social care sector due to forecast weather conditions.

Marco Petagna, a meteorologist for the Met Office, said: “It will be quite a frosty start to Monday morning. The frost and fog in the North and West will ten to lift as we go through the morning. Those showers down towards the South East could give a tricky commute for some across the South East of England.

“There are some icy patches and a rain, sleet and snow mix in some places too. Those showers will work their way westwards across Southern counties of England and turning more to rain as we go through the day.”

Dan Holley, giving the weekend and early week forecast for BBC Look East, said: “You will need to wrap up going into next week. High pressure dominates but this easterly flow [is] bringing in some cold off the North Sea.

“Tuesday will probably be the sunniest day of the week. Monday will be cloudy and quite cold as well with that brisk wind. From Wednesday onwards we may see some more cloud and drizzly showers.”

When will there be snow in Essex on Monday?

Chelmsford is predicted to receive snowfall between 9am and 10am whilst in Colchester there could be snowfall during a four-hour spell from 6am to 10am. Clouds will remain in the sky for the remainder of Monday.

Southend, meanwhile, is forecast to have sleet at 3am and 5am that turns into light snow at 6am. The Met Office predicts ‘heavy snow’ for the area at 9am that will then reduce to periodic light snow and sleet until the evening.

In Harlow there is forecast to be a sleet shower at 12pm before turning into a light snow shower by 1pm. Braintree is forecast snow between 10am and 11am and then again at around 5pm.
