But modern-day visitors to The Broch on the Isle of Harris will find every 21st century comfort within its traditional drystone walls and turfed roof.
Now the three-storey tower – thought to be the first broch built in Scotland for 2,000 years – has won a TV competition to find the country’s best holiday destination.
The Broch was named Scotland’s Greatest Escape by a panel of experts.

Owners Adam and Cathra Kelliher were unveiled as the winners on BBC Scotland and described their ‘exhilaration and disbelief’ after devoting three years to creating the ‘truly unique building’.
Mrs Kelliher said: ‘What started with an application that we didn’t think would even be picked off the slush pile ended up with us winning.’
A week’s stay in the property on the Hebridean island’s Borve Lodge Estate costs from £1,760.
The judging panel was made up of seven tourism experts, including Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers chief executive Fiona Campbell.
