A town hall meeting will be held at the Prince Rupert city hall on April 4 to discuss the major repairs to the city’s ailing water pipes and sewer system that will begin in the coming months.
The city was awarded $77.2 million on March 7 from the federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund to fix the 26 kilometres of faulty water pipes — a process that will take approximately three years of intrusive reconstruction.
That was on top of $65 million received in March 2023 from the province and $45 million the city will borrow bringing the total financing available for the $200 million project to $187 million.
The city said it wants to inform residents of what the pipes revitalization process will look like and how they will be affected.
Mayor Herb Pond has warned that entire streets will be torn up during the years of repairs, while boil water advisories will likely be frequent.
The event will take place at the Lester Centre, with doors opening at 6:30.
