LUCKNOW: BJP seeks the people’s mandate to cancel “unconstitutional” reservations extended to Muslims by Congress and give back to backward classes what is rightfully theirs, home minister Amit Shah said Wednesday at a rally in UP’s Kheri.
Shah accused the opposition of peddling lies about BJP preparing to change the Constitution and do away with SC, ST and OBC reservations. “It is Congress that stole OBC quotas and diverted that to Muslims in Andhra Pradesh (in 2004) and more recently in Karnataka,” he said.
Mocking Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who is contesting the family borough of Rae Bareli this election, for saying his party aimed to eradicate poverty “ek jhatke mein” (at one go), Shah said history suggested otherwise.
“You should look at your track record. Your dadi (Indira Gandhi) imposed Emergency at one go. Your father introduced triple talaq at one go, and now your party has stolen OBC reservations at one go.” He also slammed Congress for declaring it would repeal CAA after winning the Lok Sabha elections. “Rahul baba, aapki dadi bhi upar se aa jayein to bhi CAA ko nahi hata payengi (Rahul, even if your grandmother were to return from heaven, CAA can’t be repealed),” he said, iterating BJP’s vow to accord respect to every Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist coming to India from Pakistan and Bangladesh by giving them citizenship.
Referring to SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav’s remarks on the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Shah said that if the opposition had its way, they would put a “Babri lock” on the shrine. He said that when SP was in office, uninterrupted power supply was ensured during Ramzan, but not on Diwali and Holi. Shah declared BJP had already crossed 190 seats after the third phase of polling and was on course to achieve the goal of 400-plus, ensuring Narendra Modi becomes PM for a third consecutive term.
He said neither Congress nor SP could secure the country like PM Modi did, cracking down on terrorism in the last 10 years. “Yeh chooran ki dukan nahi hai, yeh desh hai, desh. Iske liye mazboot netritva chahiye. Aur wo ek hi hai, Narendra Modi (This is not a shop selling herbal powders, this is a country that needs strong leadership. And there is only one, Narendra Modi),” he said.
Shah, who campaigned for BJP nominee Ajay Mishra Teni in Kheri, also addressed rallies in Kannauj and Hardoi.
