Voormalig kunstrijdster Sjoukje Dijkstra (82) overleden

Voormalig kunstrijdster Sjoukje Dijkstra is op 82-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft haar dochter Katja Kossmayer in een post op Facebook bevestigd.

Dijkstra, geboren in het Friese Akkrum, werd in 1964 in Innsbruck olympisch kampioene. Het was de allereerste gouden medaille voor Nederland op de Olympische Winterspelen.

Ook veroverde ze drie wereldtitels en werd ze zesmaal gekozen tot sportvrouw van het jaar in Nederland.

In februari overleed Joan Haanappel, een ander icoon uit het Nederlandse kunstrijden. Dijkstra reageerde destijds diep geroerd. De twee waren goede vriendinnen.

“Lieve allemaal, met heel veel pijn en verdriet heb ik afscheid moeten nemen van mijn lieve moeder Sjoukje Kossmayer Dijkstra. Mijn moeder en ik waren mooi samen tot het eind”, schrijft haar dochter op Facebook.

Legende

Dijkstra, opgegroeid in Amstelveen, behoort tot de legendes in een sport waarin Nederland sinds haar gloriedagen eigenlijk nooit meer een rol van betekenis speelde. Als kunstrijdster op de schaats was ze in de jaren zestig wereldtop. Wereldkampioen in 1962, 1963 en 1964, vijf maal Europees kampioen.

Maar bovenal winnares van olympisch goud op de Winterspelen van 1964 in Innsbruck, zilver in Squaw Valley in 1960. In 1956 in Cortina d’Ampezzo debuteerde ze al op olympisch niveau, op 14-jarige leeftijd. Later verklaarde ze daar de basis te hebben gelegd voor de grote successen.

In 1968 volgde drie keer goud bij het langebaan schaatsen, voor Carry Geijssen, Kees Verkerk en Ans Schut. In een discipline buiten het langebaan schaatsen om was er pas in 2010, Vancouver, goud dankzij snowboardster Nicolien Sauerbreij.

Na haar ‘gouden’ olympische optreden koos Dijkstra voor een andere richting. Ze trad in dienst bij de ijsrevue Holiday on ice. Dat leverde geld op, wat ze in haar sportloopbaan niet had verdiend. Ze was daar tot 1972 actief.

Vanwege haar grote verdienste voor de Nederlandse sport werd Dijkstra in 2005 in Turijn door sportkoepel NOC*NSF onderscheiden met de Fanny Blankers-Koen Trofee.
