Manchester United will struggle to recoup even half of the £86million fee they paid for Antony with the club prepared to sell the winger this summer.

Antony became United’s second most expensive signing in history when the signed him from Ajax 18 months ago – having valued him at closer to £25million the previous year.

The Brazil international produced moments of real promise in his first season at the club, scoring on his debut against Arsenal and a winner against Barcelona in the Europa League.

But the 24-year-old has now failed too score a single league goal all season with his barren spell stretching back to last April.

Antony’s only goal contributions this season came against League Two side Newport County in the FA Cup with that his only start in United’s last eight games.

Teenager Omari Forson was selected ahead of him on Saturday against Fulham with Amad Diallo also called upon from the bench ahead of him.

Antony eventually came off the bench in in the ninth minute of added time with the final whistle blown 40 seconds later.

Ten Hag has not given up hope on Antony and still believes he is capable of turning his career around in England. But the Daily Mail report United will listen to offers this summer.

Given his woeful form, United’s hopes of making back the huge sum they paid in 2022 are very slim with the report suggesting the club expect to recoup less than half of that £86m fee.

United may still be prepared to cut their losses, however.

In a damning indictment, ten Hag admitted his decision to play youngsters Forson and Diallo ahead of Antony against Fulham was ‘nothing to do with fitness’.

‘He is fit but we have many options on the right side where we lack in other positions due to injuries,’ ten Hag said post-match.

‘The form in Antony we all have seen and he has to step up. I see it in training but also other Omari and Amad Diallo and Garnacho deserve to play.’
