Vidya Malavade says she was approached to play Sidharth Malhotra’s mother, found it ‘weird’: ‘How is the brain working?’

Vidya Malavade, who is still remembered for playing Vidya Sharma in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De India, recently opened up about her experience with regards to getting rejected for various kinds of roles and said that she has been rejected on the grounds of “too young, too old, too pretty, not-so-pretty, too glamorous, not glamorous”. In the same conversation, Vidya, who is 51, recalled the time when she was called to play the role of Sidharth Malhotra’s mother. She is only 12 years older than the actor.

Talking to Bollywood Bubble, Vidya said, “I remember I got this call for… This is really weird… Some casting people who were casting for Sidharth Malhotra’s mother in some… I am not going to say where but in something and they called me and I was just… Really? Do you have no clue about what you must do? Some casting person, she was probably a new assistant or whatever. But I am like, ‘How? What is it? How is the brain working?'”

Recently, Richa Chadha, in an interview with ABPLive, had revealed that she was offered the role of Hrithik Roshan’s mother by a casting director when she was only 21 years old. She said, “Not only are you doing a disservice to a young actor, you are also taking away an older actor’s part which is already shrinking.”

Vidya Malavade said that she has been rejected on multiple grounds and while she takes it on her chin almost every time, it has started to irritate her now. In the same chat, Vidya also recalled how Imtiaz Ali found her to be “too glamorous” when he was finalising the casting for Sony LIV’s Dr Arora. Vidya said that they wanted someone who looks like a “middle class housewife from the heartland of the country”. The actor said that she sent in her photos and even those didn’t work. She shared that she called her house help and borrowed her saree and clicked some photos, which eventually helped her in landing the part.

Vidya will soon be seen in Aayush Sharma-starrer Ruslaan. She will also be seen in the third season on Netflix’s Mismatched.
