Mimos to speed up National Digital Identity project, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Mimos Berhad will spearhead the implementation of the project to develop the National Digital Identity (IDN), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this during a visit to the Mimos Technology Park, where he announced an initial allocation of RM80mil to Mimos to speed up the development of the IDN as its lead agency.

“In order to speed up the programme and fast-track its implementation, I was given an assurance that it can be done in three months on condition that the government allocation is provided,” said Anwar.

He added in a speech after touring the Mimos Technology Park on Tuesday (Nov 21) that the allocation will be channelled by the Finance Ministry and Home Ministry by next week while

all other related approvals will be given at the end of this month.

Anwar then said the RM80mil is just the initial allocation to fast-track the IDN and added that all ministries and departments will have to register their requirements through the IDN next week to speed up the project further.

Anwar said that the project will be used to allocate targeted subsidies or other benefits.

In August, Anwar announced that the IDN development project would be fast-tracked as part of an initiative to boost digital transformation in the public sector.

When in place, the IDN will serve as a secure, trusted digital information platform to obtain confirmed information.

The IDN comes under the National Registration Department and is also aimed to be a way to verify identity on the Internet or an individual virtual identity online.

Mimos was set up to initiate research and development (R&D) in Microelectronics in 1985 under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Mimos has since filed over 2,000 patents in various technology domains and key socio-economic areas, rebranding itself as Mimos Global in 2022.
