The Philippine Coast Guard rescued 181 persons from a passenger vessel that ran aground near Port of Real in Quezon province on Thursday morning.

According to a statement, passenger vessel MV Virgen De Peñafrancia II reportedly drifted into shallow waters and grounded at a seabed at around 10 a.m.

The vessel carried 29 crew members, 152 passengers, 16 vehicles, and 51 motorcycles at the time of the incident.

“This incident was attributed to strong currents and low tide conditions in the area at the time,” read the statement from PCG.

The rescued individuals were disembarked and transferred to the Real Terminal Port through private motorbancas, and have since been confirmed to be in good physical condition by the Real Rural Health Unit.

Meanwhile, assessments are being conducted regarding potential towing operations.

No oil slicks have also been declared as a result of the incident.— Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
