Vandals target road signs after criticism

vandals target road signs after criticism

The new 20mph signs in Herne Bay have been vandalised

Signs erected alongside road markings which had been criticised for being dangerous have been vandalised.

Red paint had been used at nine junctions in Herne Bay, Kent, to mark new 20mph speed zones.

Among the complaints were that the red sections were dangerously slippy for motorcyclists and the colour too bright.

Kent County Council previously said they were considered the “appropriate” to encourage “self-enforcement”.

More than a dozen of the signs have been vandalised and Kent Police are investigating.

The new signs and markings appear on roads off Sea Street, Fleetwood Avenue and Station Road in the town.

However, locals raised concerns over how slippery the road markings got in the rain.

Kent Police said the damage to the signs was believed to have been caused last Thursday evening.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the force.
