Leonardo DiCaprio's new Hollywood movie sparks fury in Sacramento after homeless people and their tents were dragged out of shoot site during huge rainstorm with less than a day's notice

Oscar winner DiCaprio is shooting a new film tentatively titled BC Project Homeless in Cesar Chavez Park were given under 24 hours to vacate for filmingMany are outraged given the short lead time and the ongoing storms in the area

Leonardo DiCaprio’s next movie shot in Sacramento last week, causing anger among local residents after the California capital cleared it’s homeless population from the area with less than a day’s notice.

The Oscar winner has been pictured shooting his new role for director Paul Thomas Anderson, a film currently titled BC Project.

Sacramento officials cleared half a dozen homeless tents from Cesar Chavez Plaza so they could shoot last Thursday. Filming was not scheduled to take place until Sunday.

‘Attention to vacate’ notices were posted on all of the tents in the park, located in the city’s downtown with only 24 hours to move, though all the homeless were offered a spot at their newly opened shelter.

Many were angry, however, that the tents were moved with such short noticed and during the state’s chaotic atmospheric river storms.

Sacramento, like much of California’s cities, is undergoing a homeless crisis, with the city’s Democratic District Attorney filing a lawsuit in September against the Democrat-led capital over failure to clean up homeless encampments, escalating tensions between city leaders.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development found that California accounts for half of all homeless people in the country. Homelessness advocacy group Sacramento Steps Forward says that 9,278 homeless people live in Sacramento County.

Roughly three-quarters of the county´s homeless population is unsheltered, and the majority of that group are living on Sacramento streets.

In 2022, California’s state capital city saw homeless population numbers grow higher than San Francisco.

Crime data from from the California Department of Justice found that in 2022 there were 8,894 violent crimes in Sacramento County.

The president of the Sacramento Homeless Union, Crystal Sanchez, slammed the city for the lack of prep time and doing this in the midst of a major storm.

‘It is asinine in the midst of an atmospheric storm, against federal laws and protections unhoused people are being moved and placed in greater danger for Hollywood to roll footage in Sacramento,’ she said.

‘The city permit should have not been issued without appropriately placing individuals in shelter as the city is well aware of the homeless crisis in the area.’

Anij Baker, 61, who lives in one of the park tents after becoming homeless around four years ago, said he and his partner had not been offered a space at the shelter, according to the Sacramento Bee.

‘It’s terrible. We have nowhere to go. All our clothes and shoes are wet. We have no food,’ Baker said

The city has a waiting list over 1,200 for their 1,300 shelter beds, which are currently full.

‘We’ve gotta put everything in the cart,’ added Baker. ‘It’s gonna be heavy.’

The head of Sacramento Film, Jennifer West, said she was excited for Anderson and DiCaprio’s film to work in their city.

‘We are thrilled to have these creative projects come to life in Sacramento,’ she wrote in a blog post.

‘We appreciate your cooperation and support as we showcase the beauty and vitality of Sacramento through these cinematic endeavors.’

Shooting is scheduled to go on in the area until Tuesday.

In photos exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com, DiCaprio, 49, looks unrecognizable in a disheveled costume consisting of a dirtied bathrobe and jeans, along with large sunglasses and a grey beanie.

The actor – who was recently snubbed for an Oscar for Killers of the Flower Moon – was seen on the set with Anderson in the Northern California town of Eureka in late January.

Somewhat ironically, DiCaprio’s character appears to have fallen on hard times himself as he makes a call on a pay phone and sinks to the floor, a defeated expression on his face.

Cameras zeroed in on DiCaprio as he sat outside a grocery store, dramatically reaching his hand across the cement.

The film’s plot is currently being kept under wraps, but Deadline recently reported that the film also stars Sean Penn and Regina Hall.

The movie is set in contemporary times and was written by Anderson. Anderson is also producing the movie with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.

In addition to the three leads, Deadline reported that the film will have a large ensemble cast.

The film’s budget is said to be close to $100 million, Variety reports.

Anderson is the director behind numerous critically-acclaimed films, including Boogie Nights, Licorice Pizza, and Punch-Drunk Love.

The new film comes after Leonardo was snubbed for an Oscar for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon. The film did receive numerous nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, Best Actress for Lily Gladstone, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro.
