A chemical smell inside an office building has sparked an emergency situation and forced hundreds of workers to evacuate in Brisbane CBD.
Emergency services were called after the odour was detected on several floors of a building on George Street about 2.45pm today.
Steven Marmotta from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said 250 people were evacuated, with some experiencing rashes and headaches.
About 250 evacuated the George St building after detecting the chemical smell.
Scientific teams are doing atmospheric testing to determine whether it is safe to enter the building.
Marmotta said the chemical smell could have come from some cleaning works that were being done but that would need to be confirmed by testing.
“We’ve got scientific crews up there doing atmospheric testing,” he said.
“We always are cautious, whenever we get a call about a chemical smell and people being affected we take it seriously.”
Paramedics have so far treated 25 people, some with very minor symptoms.
No one has needed to be taken to a hospital.
