I just came out of a virtual town hall at the University of Winnipeg on the cyber attack. 1000. People logged on and there were hundreds of questions. University officials say the breach means the school year will have to be a week longer. Exams are coming up, so we spoke with students earlier today to see how they’re feeling. We can’t access our, like, online stuff, so we kind of left in the dark and it’s right before finals too. Our finances and our transcript and our personal information could be very, very vulnerable at this time, especially if it is an attack. So yeah, 100%, I’ve been very, very worried. The university says it discovered the cyber incident Sunday and immediately shut down a few services to secure its network. Classes were cancelled Monday, but as of Wednesday, many services, including Nexus, are still down. It’s been really difficult to access our notes. I know for my classes I haven’t been able to, you know, access that because everything is in our Nexus page, so. It’s really, really difficult. And especially at this time, it’s near the end of the year. Assistant professor Felix Matthews says the cyber incident caught everyone off guard. As we know, exams are coming up and assignments are due soon. This is the most stressful aspect because you want to have students want students to have access to their pedagogical material, but they don’t necessarily have access to their e-mail either. University officials don’t think personal information was compromised, but they are still looking into it. They’re working with cybersecurity companies to get the most important. Services back online. They hope that will happen by next week, but they need to make sure it’s safe 1st and that another breach doesn’t happen. Rosanna Hemphill, CBC News, Winnipeg.
