university boss made permanent in role

Prof David Maguire has been made substantive in his role as vice-chancellor

A university boss tasked with tackling a multimillion-pound deficit has been given the job permanently.

Prof David Maguire has been interim vice-chancellor at the University of East Anglia (UEA) since last spring.

He has now been made substantive in the role.

Chair of council Dr Sally Howes said: “I am confident that he is the best person to provide the focus needed to guide UEA into a sustainable and positive future.”

Prof Maguire had initially been appointed for a two-year period, and pledged to boost the student intake and shrink the staff bill in a bid to address a deficit of £30m for 2023-24.

Dr Howes said: “Stability and consistency, together with outstanding research and teaching leadership are key to securing UEA’s long-term sustainability and academic success.

“Prof Maguire will ensure recovery and change continue at pace, and that UEA’s mission to provide outstanding education and research for the public benefit is realised.

“I know that he has been impressed by all that the university offers and its role as an anchor institution in the region.”

Earlier this week, UEA named former BBC director Jenny Abramsky as its eighth chancellor, a figurehead role.
