It may not be the weather for it but underwear is becoming the hot outerwearREAD MORE: The Crown's Meg Bellamy channels Kate Middleton in cream at series premiere, while Emma Corrin puts a quirky modern twist on a classic Princess Diana look
It may not be the trend you expected, but it’s the one that has been predicted – wearing underpants as trousers – and one of the fashionistas driving it is non-binary actor Emma Corrin.
Emma, who is best known for playing Diana, Princess of Wales in Netflix royal drama The Crown, was spotted walking the catwalk for Miu Miu for its Paris fashion show.
They donned a pair of sequinned briefs paired with a cream turtleneck, bleached blonde hair, and orange heels.
Later that year, at the Venice Film Festival, they debuted a more grungy version of the look.
This time, the thespian sported a pair of khaki briefs and matching cardigan, with black tights and black brogues, both looks described on a recent episode of Women’s Hour.

The design house leading the underwear as outerwear look is Miu Miu, as demonstrated by its Autumn/Winter 2023 show, which saw models alongside Emma Corrin don sparkly briefs.
Speaking after the show, the brand’s creative director Miuccia Prada lamented that age stopped her from sporting the look herself.
Talking to Vogue after the show, she said: ‘If I were younger, I would go out in panties!’
She was presumably delighted to see Emma donning the look as she attended Venice several months later, in that case.
Miuccia Prada is not the only major fashion voice promoting the risqué look.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Julia Hobbs, British Vogue’s acting European fashion features director, also spoke about the look.
She described the look as ‘very elemental’, suggesting it was a return to a bygone era.
And, she said, the bold trend represented ‘people wanting to be themselves in how they dress’.

Julia added: ‘I think what we’re seeing now is a sort of return to very elemental dressing and we’re seeing this revival of a very 1960s look, which is wearing a pair of simple black briefs over a pair of tights.’
The fashionista spoke about wearing a version of the outfit to work – noting that barely an eyebrow was raised when she donned the ensemble to the Vogue office.
She did, however, receive ‘a couple of quizzical looks on the Tube’ on her way to work.
Summing up the look to Woman’s Hour, Julia said: ‘We should feel confident to embrace this and I think it’s interesting looking at the popularity of this trend in the context of Skims.’
She added: ‘I think it does lean into this attitude of “take me as I am” and feeling great in their own skin and owning it.’
