La police est intervenue mardi 30 avril sur le campus de l’université de Columbia à New York pour déloger les étudiants qui manifestaient en soutien au peuple palestinien.

Un porte-parole du procureur de Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, a confirmé ce jeudi 2 mai qu’un policier a fait usage de son arme de service deux jours plus tôt, lors de l’évacuation des manifestants propalestiniens de la prestigieuse université Columbia. Aucune personne n’a été blessée, a affirmé Doug Cohen, cité par l’agence Associated Press.

Lorsque le policier a fait usage de son arme, aucun étudiant n’était à proximité immédiate, a-t-il précisé, sans donner plus d’éléments sur l’incident.

C’est en tenue antiémeute, aidés d’un véhicule d’intervention avec échelle, que des dizaines, voire des centaines de policiers, étaient entrés tard mardi 30 avril sur le campus de Columbia, alors que la colère étudiante américaine se propage depuis deux semaines dans les universités de tout le pays, rappelant les manifestations contre la guerre du Vietnam à la fin des années 1960.

Des agents casqués, grimpant sur l’échelle, ont ensuite fait irruption via une fenêtre dans le bâtiment occupé.

Des dizaines de personnes, certains portant le keffieh, ont été interpellées et menottées avant d’être placées dans des bus de la police. À l’extérieur du campus, la foule criait “Palestine libre!”.

Biden lance un rappel à l’ordre

Le président Joe Biden est sorti de son quasi silence ce jeudi 2 mai sur la mobilisation contre l’offensive israélienne dans la bande de Gaza qui agite depuis deux semaines les universités américaines, pour lancer un rappel à l’ordre.

“Les manifestations violentes ne sont pas protégées, ce sont les manifestations pacifiques qui le sont”, a dit le président américain, qui briguera un second mandat face au républicain Donald Trump en novembre.

“Le vandalisme, l’intrusion de force, casser des fenêtres, bloquer des campus, contraindre à l’annulation de cours ou de cérémonies de remise de diplômes, rien de tout cela ne relève de la manifestation pacifique”, a énuméré le démocrate de 81 ans. “C’est contraire à la loi”.
