Donald Trump declares himself victim of ‘lawfare' as Republican rolls out new buzz word

Donald Trump has declared himself a victim of "lawfare," a new buzz word the former president is using in the context of his various criminal proceedings.

The term seems to mean "weaponization of the law," and Trump has claimed Democrats are using it against him in his New York hush money trial.

In a recent post on Truth Social, the GOP nominee quoted Gregg Jarrett, a Fox News legal analyst and commentator, who has made comments about the new buzz word.

Trump wrote in a post: "Gregg Jarrett: Weaponization of the law or 'lawfare,' by any means, is now justified. It's the popular currency among Biden Democrats. Abiding by the rule of law is a mere inconvenience, a pesky nuisance. It can be discarded like yesterday's trash."

Filmmaker Oliver Stone also said in a recent interview with Variety that Trump is being targeted by "lawfare."

Stone said in the interview: "The charges on both sides of the Trump-Biden election are pretty wild - that Biden is corrupt and Trump is corrupt.

"It's a new form of warfare. It's called lawfare. And that's what they're using against Trump."

This comes as the prosecution in Trump's hush money trial rested their case on Monday, making way for the jury to begin their deliberations as soon as this week.

Judge Juan M. Merchan in the case is expected to hear closing arguments on May 28.

Defense lawyers said they have not decided whether Trump himself will testify, following shocking testimony from key witnesses such as porn actor Stormy Daniels and Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen in recent weeks.

Trump also has not responded to shouted questions from reporters about whether his lawyers have advised him not to take the stand.

In comments to the media after court wrapped on Monday, Trump called the judge a "tyrant" and said he hopes his lawyers' move to dismiss the case succeeds "because this trial is a disaster for our country."

Trump, carrying a legal notepad and printed pieces of paper, read statements that supporters such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz made about the case, while also noting that he had to be careful of what he quoted because of the gag order.

He also quoted Stone's recent remarks about "lawfare," adding: "Haven't heard his name mentioned in awhile."

The former president nevertheless declared that he thought the trial was going "very well."

He said: "There were no crimes. We did nothing wrong. And I want to get back to campaigning."
