Una nueva investigación, presentada en la Cumbre Americana de Fisiología en Long Beach, California, revela que 15 minutos de ejercicio pueden mejorar significativamente la función inmunológica.

Este estudio, que aún no fue publicado en una revista revisada por pares, según el sitio especializado Healthline, encontró que breves ráfagas de actividad física aumentan la producción de células asesinas naturales (NK), un tipo de glóbulo blanco crucial para combatir las células infectadas y cancerosas en el cuerpo.

  • El estudio, que involucró a 10 participantes de entre 18 y 40 años, buscaba examinar los efectos del ejercicio breve en la función inmunológica.
  • A cada participante se le asignó montar en una bicicleta estática durante 30 minutos a una intensidad moderada.
  • Se tomaron muestras de sangre de los participantes antes de comenzar el ejercicio y nuevamente a los 15 y 30 minutos de actividad.
  • Los resultados mostraron que los niveles de células NK aumentaron después de solo 15 minutos de ciclismo, pero no continuaron aumentando después de 30 minutos de actividad.

Michael Fredericson, MD, profesor de Medicina Física y Rehabilitación en Stanford Medicine, comentó sobre estos nuevos resultados, destacando que incluso sesiones cortas de ejercicio son suficientes para activar el sistema inmunológico y aumentar la presencia de estas células.

Las células NK, como explicó Fredericson, están constantemente vigilando las células malignas.

    Durante y después del ejercicio, la temperatura corporal aumenta, lo que puede dificultar la supervivencia de bacterias y virus, similar a lo que ocurre con la fiebre.

    La actividad física también reduce el estrés, lo que a su vez puede proteger contra enfermedades al disminuir la inflamación crónica que afecta la capacidad del cuerpo para combatir infecciones.

    Además, el ejercicio mejora la calidad y duración del sueño, lo que es fundamental para una función inmunológica óptima, y alivia los efectos nocivos de los radicales libres y el estrés oxidativo, ambos contribuyentes a enfermedades crónicas.

Por otra parte, los investigadores señalan que incluso ráfagas cortas de ejercicio de intensidad moderada pueden ofrecer grandes beneficios para la salud:

Fredericson destaca la importancia de encontrar actividades físicas que disfrutes y puedas realizar regularmente, como caminar, bailar, jugar tenis o andar en bicicleta. El objetivo es sentirse desafiado sin llegar al agotamiento completo.

Sin embargo, es clave evitar episodios prolongados de ejercicio intenso, ya que pueden suprimir el sistema inmunológico. Es necesario incorporar descanso y recuperación adecuados en los programas de ejercicio para mantener una salud óptima.
