Umran Malik should play: Tom Moody points out SRH’s lack of wicket-taking options
Tom Moody said that SRH should consider bringing back Umran Malik in their playing XI for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. On Monday, May 6, the Sunrisers lost to Hardik Pandya’s MI by 7 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With the defeat, SRH still have some work to do before they cement their position in the playoffs.
With 12 points and a net run rate of -0.065 thanks to wins in 6 out of 11 matches, the SRH are placed fourth in the table. Moody said that Cummins and Co. should include Umran to bolster their bowling attack. Umran burst onto the scene in 2021 and made heads turn by clocking over 150 km/h on a consistent basis.
However, this season, Umran has played only a solitary match against MI back in March at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. In 26 IPL matches, the speedster has taken 29 wickets at an economy rate of 9.40. Moody said that it should not be a matter of concern for SRH if the pacer goes for runs as long as he picks quick wickets for them.

‘Umran Malik is there to bowl high pace’
“The other option they need to consider is Umran Malik. Because at the end of the day, what those stats tell us where they are positioned in those 3 phases, it’s saying that they are lacking wicket-taking potential,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo.

“Forget about the economy, I don’t care if Umran went for 15 an over. If he bowls 2 overs and took 2 wickets for 30, I am happy because he has done his job. He is there to bowl high pace and break open the middle overs, getting a couple of wickets. SRH need someone to take wickets,” Moody added.
The Sunrisers will try to return to winning ways when they face KL Rahul’s LSG on Wednesday, May 8 in Hyderabad.
