There is no threat of a tsunami affecting the Philippines after a strong earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
In its tsunami advisory issued 5:12 a.m., PHIVOLCS said: “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data.”
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit the New Britain Region, Papua New Guinea on Monday morning, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ)) said, according to Reuters. The quake was at a depth of 79 km (49.1 miles).
PHIVOLCS however reported the earthquake which occurred at 4:57 a.m. as having magnitude 6.5 with a depth of 81 km. —KG, GMA Integrated News
