Two of the Philippines’ Biggest Hotels Are Expected to Open in Cebu and Davao This Year

Foreign investors have been turning to key investment hubs outside Metro Manila for years now. In particular, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao have consistently ranked among the most attractive locations for business and tourism.

Soon, both cities may be seeing their biggest hotels yet. DoubleDragon Corporation, one of the leading property developers in the country, is unveiling its two newest branches under the Hotel101 chain in Cebu and Davao.

Slated to open this year, the 519-unit Hotel101 in Davao is expected to be the largest hotel in Mindanao. It will also be equipped with commercial and retail stores.

Hotel101 Cebu-Mactan, on the other hand, will be comprised of 548 units, featuring more upscale cosmopolitan accommodation. Poised to be the biggest in Visayas once it operates next year, it will have its own convention center and commercial strip.

Of course, Metro Manila will get its own version, too. A Hotel101 branch in Libis, Quezon City is currently under construction, according to DoubleDragon. The 702-unit lodge is set to be the biggest in the city, complete with a 2,547-square meter prime titled commercial lot.

Tycoon Edgar “Injap” Sia II, chairman of DoubleDragon, said other hotels of the same brand will soon be built in major tourism sites, including Baguio, Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, and Cagayan de Oro.

There are only two Hotel101 branches at the moment: one in Manila Bay, and the other at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

‘Just like a burger’

If you want to find out what makes the hotel business different, think burger, Sia, who founded the Philippine fast food restaurant chain Mang Inasal, said.

“Eventually, we see Hotel101 rooms to be just like that one iconic hamburger in a global fast food chain,” Hotel101 CEO Hannah Yulo-Luccini said in an earlier statement.

“It is the same no matter where you go. Yes, the price changes as costs vary from country to country, but the burger doesn’t change.”

The hotel chain, using the concept of standardization, offers a 21-square meter signature space, which it calls the “Happy Room.” DoubleDragon emphasizes efficiency in its practices.

The company, run by both Sia and Jollibee Foods Corporation’s Tony Tan Caktiong, established Hotel101 as the first Filipino hotel chain to go global.

Outside the Philippines, DoubleDragon is looking to build on its “top-of-the-line” offerings based in Madrid, Spain; Niseko, Japan; and the United States in the following year.
