KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — Two military helicopters collided today during the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (TLDM) rehearsal for its 90th anniversary celebration scheduled for May.
Perak police confirmed the incident, which was said to have happened during a fly-over exercise near TLDM’s Lumut airbase.
“So far, the extent of casualties remains uncertain, further reports will follow,” Perak police chief, Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, was quoted saying by news agency Bernama.
It is understood that the collision involved an AgustaWestland AW139 medium-size utility helicopter and its Eurocopter Fennec light-size counterpart.
Preliminary reports said the two aircraft left Padang Sitiawan at approximately 9.03am before colliding, with the AW139 crashing onto the steps of the stadium of the Lumut airbase while the Fennec fell into the swimming pool of the airbase’s sports complex.
The report said there were 10 crew onboard both helicopters. The police have not confirmed the fate of the crew members.
