Tsunami alert after devastating volcanic eruption rocks nation
Australia is on tsunami alert after Indonesian stratovolcano Mount Ruang, in North Sulawesi Province, erupted spectacularly five times in 24 hours.
The eruptions of Mount Ruang forced 11,000 people to evacuate and the closure of an international airport.
Ash and plumes of smoke were spewed thousands of metres into the air.
The volcano is located 1,640kmfrom Indonesia’s tourist hotspot Bali.
According to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, Mount Ruang first erupted at 9:45pm local time on Tuesday and then four times throughout Wednesday.
Sam Ratulangi International Airport in the city of Manado, located more than 100 kilometres from Mount Ruang, was forced to close.
