Tough Oilers Forward Calls Out Refs
EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers look to extinguish the Los Angeles Kings hopes tonight.
Tempers have been high all series long – and one moment from the previous game now has more context surrounding it.
During Game four between the Oilers and Kings, Evander Kane was knocked down along the boards by Blake Lizotte. Some time after the play you could see Kane having a discussion with the referees about the incident – we now know what was said in that conversation.
At the beginning of the discussion the referee first says to Kane, “you’re upset, I’ll talk to you when you calm down.” Kane assures him that he is calm – so then they proceed with their conversation.

Referee, “what did he do?”
Kane, “that’s a slew foot man.”
Drew Doughty, “you do it every time Kaner.”
Kane, “I do it?”
Doughty, “you do it every time.”
Referee, “I didn’t see no slew foot. If I missed it, I missed it.”
Kane, “how do I land on my back?”
Referee, “because I think you jump up to get out of the way and you hit the boards, and you go down. If you say that it’s a slew foot, I didn’t see it.”
Kane, “he’s skating beside me right? He’s a small, little guy. And he gets right under me and (expletive) my legs up.”
Referee, “I didn’t see that. We both had a good look at it.”
Kane, “I’m just saying.”
Kane did a good job here of keeping a calm head while stating his case to the referees. Of course Doughty was there to give his thoughts – and stir the pot.
Kane has played exceptionally well this series – a welcomed sign after missing the last three games of the regular season in order to get healthy for a deep playoff run. He’s been a factor in every game, despite only having two points.
His physicality has been pivotal in keeping momentum on the Oilers side during games. He has 13 hits in four games while averaging 15:28 of ice time per game in the post season.
