Top hidden vacation spots in Delaware you should visit this winter, what to do
Whether you’re staying in town for the holidays or looking for some local winter fun off the beaten path, don’t overlook these top underrated winter vacation spots in Delaware.
Family Destinations Guide surveyed 3,000 travelers to find out which winter vacation destinations people may be overlooking, and out of the top 150 responses, three locations in Delaware were featured.
So if you find yourself traveling through the Small Wonder this winter, or just need some new local hangouts to explore, give these hidden gems a chance.
Milton

Coming in at No. 50, Milton in Sussex County is the highest-ranked location from Delaware to be featured in Family Destinations Guide’s report.
Located a short ride away from Lewes, Milton is a small town that is filled with Victorian architecture, vintage shops and several family-owned restaurants.
Winter visitors can take a walk along the Broadkill River, which empties into the Delaware Bay, or visit nearby Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. There, you’ll find plenty of trails to hike, ample bird-watching opportunities and guest appearances from local wildlife.
With proximity to the beaches, a cozy stay in Milton offers a more local vibe without the hustle and bustle of the main beach attractions. Plus, winter is a popular time for community events in the area.
Delaware City
Another underrated community on the list is Delaware City, coming in at No. 81.
This waterfront town in New Castle County is brimming with local history, like Fort Delaware State Park, and nearby Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, an old fortress and prisoner of war camp used during the Civil War that was cited as one of the most haunted places in the nation and featured on A&E’s “Ghost Hunters” reality TV show.
A weekend in Delaware City lends itself to scenic riverfront walks, local historical tours and community activities. You can also check out the Delaware City Marina and catch full-scale replicas of historical ships sailing the Delaware River.
Once you’re done exploring, grab a bite to eat at Sunday’s Café 64 or La Matesina Pizza Pasta.
Bowers Beach

Rounding out Delaware’s list of winter hidden gems is Bowers Beach at No. 118.
Bowers Beach is located on the coast near Dover Air Force Base in Kent County and is quieter than Delaware’s more well-known beach towns.
From there, wildlife enthusiasts can take a trip to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which features appearances from ruddy ducks, snow geese, eagles, rough-legged hawks and whitetail deer, or if you prefer to eat your way through a new place, you can check out local digs serving coastal cuisine.
Before you leave, visit a local museum, spend a few hours on a boat charter, go kayaking or sailing or get to know the town’s history as one of the earliest settlements along the Delaware Bay.
