Todd Boehly makes rare public statement on Chelsea's form under Mauricio Pochettino

In a rare public statement, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has spoken positively on the recent progress of the club under Mauricio Pochettino.

The US businessman has endured a difficult time since taking over the Blues alongside Clearlake Capital in May 2022, with Chelsea finishing 12th last season and languishing in mid-table for much of this term. That has been despite in excess of £1billion spent and a major overhaul of playing staff undertaken as the west London side also look to target the world’s best young talent.

Chelsea head coach Pochettino has seen his position at Stamford Bridge come under scrutiny on more than one occasion in 2023/24 but his side’s side’s form has improved. Boehly recognised this during his interview at Sportico Invest, and expressed his surprise at how quickly narratives can change with the Blues now seventh in the table.

“We’ve seen the last two and a half games, at least in the second half at Aston Villa (2-2 draw) and Tottenham (2-0 win) and West Ham (5-0 win) where we played just beautiful football,” Boehly said.

“It was so fluid, it was exactly the way we drew it up, when we came out of the back, built up and moved up the pitch, (it was) very organised and the number of shots we had on board. In those two and a half games, you could really start to see what we were working on coming together.

“Even the commentary has changed over the last two and a half games. I’ve never seen anything change so quickly.”

Boehly also commented on the prospect of seeing spending restricted in the Premier League from the 2025/26 season. A cap is expected to be put in place to anchor spending, and Chelsea’s chief is not peturbed by the prospect.

Todd Boehly’s Chelsea have underperformed since his 2022 arrival

“We’re supportive of anything that adds to the competitive nature of the sport,” he explained. “The reason the Premier League is doing so well is because it is so competitive and everyone wants to watch it and no one knows how the games are gonna happen.

“If you look around at what’s going on right now in different European leagues, some of them are having a hard time selling their media (rights). I think the competitiveness that you’re going to continue to see and evolve as the sport evolves is just going be good for the Premier League.”
