TN Home Department orders probe into real-life incident behind 'Manjummel Boys' movie
The Tamil Nadu government has intervened in the narrative of the acclaimed Malayalam film ‘Manjummel Boys’. The 2024 survival thriller, inspired by true events dating back 18 years, depicted a harrowing incident faced by a group of friends during their visit to Kodaikanal. The movie portrayed their courageous rescue mission after one of their own fell into a crevice at Guna Caves.
The real-life incident, which occurred in 2006, saw Siju Davis, a member of the original group, heroically saving his friend from a 120-feet deep crevice. However, recent developments have brought the spotlight back to this incident, with Tamil Nadu’s Home Secretary, P Amudha, directing the state’s Director General of Police to conduct a thorough investigation.

According to On Manorama, the reason for this probe was a complaint lodged by V Shiju Abraham, a Railway Consultative Committee member and Congress leader from Nilambur, Kerala. Allegations surfaced regarding the conduct of Kodaikanal police during the rescue operation, with claims of assault against the group members who sought their assistance.
Meanwhile, according to the reports, the original members of the ‘Manjummel Boys’ group are hesitant to move forward with legal action. Siju Davis, a member of the original gang, acknowledged the accuracy of the movie’s portrayal of police mistreatment when they sought assistance from Tamil Nadu authorities. However, he mentioned that following the film’s release, Tamil Nadu police and forest guards met them during a visit to Guna Caves and apologized for the past incident.
