Thomas Tuchel would be open to replacing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager this summer, according to reports in Germany.

The 50-year-old is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, although the German club have encountered several issues with finding a replacement.

Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick have all turned down Bayern’s approach so far and the German club are now adding more names to their shortlist, including Ten Hag.

The Dutchman’s position at Old Trafford came under renewed threat on Monday evening following United’s 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park – a result which has left the team eighth in the Premier League and in danger of missing out on European football next season.

According to Sky Germany, there has been informal contact between Tuchel and United’s hierarchy and it’s understood that the former Chelsea manager is attracted by the prospect of becoming the next manager at Old Trafford, although his immediate focus is reaching the Champions League final with Bayern.

The report adds that Tuchel is also open to returning to Chelsea, although there is no indication that Mauricio Pochettino’s position is under immediate threat.

Pochettino admits he is uncertain over his future at Chelsea, while the club’s hierarchy will not make a decision over his position until a full review of the season is conducted once the campaign is over.

Tuchel, meanwhile, was said to be open extending his stay at Bayern for another season before he was angered by the comments made by Bayern’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, two weeks ago, who suggested that Tuchel was not willing to improve the club’s younger players, including Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala.

Tuchel said that Hoeness’ assessment of his management ‘insults my honour as a coach’.

Over the weekend, Bayern made it clear that they are expecting Tuchel to leave at the end of the season.

‘The agreement is in place,’ Bayern president, Herbert Hainer, said on Saturday.

‘I am convinced we will present a good coach.’

Asked if he could stay at Bayern, Tuchel said: ‘I’m totally the wrong person to contact.

‘At the moment there’s nothing else to say from my side. The club took the initiative at the end of February and we came to an agreement.

‘Since then, the club has been looking intensively. I guess that’s a bad motivation to say again, ‘oh, now we can talk to you again’. From my side, that’s clear at the moment.’
