Liberal MP Zoe McKenzie says the “urgency is just not there” for the Albanese government to rush its detainee bill through parliament as it appears they are “confident” they will win their High Court case.
‘The urgency is not there’: Liberal MP slams Albanese govt for rushing detainee bill
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has accused the Opposition of playing politics after the Albanese government failed to secure emergency removal powers for non-citizens.
The Opposition and Greens in the Senate rejected the government’s urgency with the bill and referred the laws to a parliamentary inquiry for scrutiny.
“It would appear that the government is confident that they’re going to win the High Court case at the moment, based on what I understand from the papers this morning,” Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia.
“The urgency is just not there.”
