Teko Modise says Pirates should be challenging Sundowns

Former Orlando Pirates star Teko Modise says inconsistency is why the Buccaneers cannot challenge Mamelodi Sundowns.

Masandawana are top of the DStv Premiership and lead third-place Pirates by 15 points. Before the start of the season, many tipped Jose Riveiro’s side to challenge Masandawana for the league title but the men from Soweto failed to bring the challenge.

Although the Sea Robbers won the MTN8 by beating the Brazilians, their league form has been inconsistent.

Teko Modise still feels Pirates are the only PSL side that can compete with Sundowns for the league.

“It’s very difficult because everyone wants Orlando Pirates to be the ones that challenge Sundowns but looking at the gap now, realistically Pirates are playing for a Champions League spot not the league per se,” Modise was quoted on IOL.

Teko Modise explains where Pirates lacks compared to Sundowns

Riveiro’s side has done well in Cup competitions so far. They bagged in the MTN8 but lost out on the Carling KnockOut Cup late last year. On Saturday, the Buccaneers edged out AmaZulu to reach the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

“What troubles Pirates is the consistency, they play so well in Cup competitions, they have the know-how in terms of winning cup competitions but the consistency within the league becomes a problem,” Modise said.

Out of 23 matches, the Buccaneers have only won 10, highlighting their lack of consistency. Teko Modise believes if Pirates can improve their away record, they can match Sundowns.

“You look at their record away from home this season, it’s not convincing, it’s not the form of a team that should be winning the league so if they can balance winning both home and away next season then they’ll stand a good chance of challenging.”
