Teen collapses, dies after school cross-country run
KUALA PILAH: A 14-year-old student from a residential school here collapsed during a cross-country run and died later while receiving treatment at the district hospital.
Kuala Pilah deputy police chief DSP Syahrul Anuar Abdul Wahab said the boy participated in the 7km run with some 700 other students on Friday morning (April 19).
He said according to a police report lodged by a teacher, the race started at around 8am.
“However, the student collapsed just 50m away from the finishing line,” he said in a statement.
He said teachers attempted CPR on the young boy but to no avail.
“They called 999 and the ambulance arrived within 10 minutes.
” The medical team continued CPR efforts for another 10 minutes before he was rushed to the district hospital,” he said.
DSP Syahrul Anuar said medical personnel at the hospital tried to revive the boy for about an hour but were unsuccessful.
He said the deceased’s father later told medical staff that the National Heart Institute had diagnosed his son with a hole in the heart in 2016.
“Since then, the boy has been receiving treatment and medication from IJN,” he added.
