Mattress on floor in section of living room lists for $525 a month, highlighting renters’ struggle

A room that has been advertised for rent on Facebook for $525 a month has highlighted the impact of the current rental crisis.

A post popped up on FB advertising for “1 boy to live in living room” of a property located in Sydney, Australia.

A photo of the “room” shows a single mattress laid out on a tile floor with panel dividers, or Japanese folding doors surrounding it – playing the part of walls – with next to no space and zero storage.

A second photo in the post shows the bathroom the tenant will have access to, which appears much bigger than the area they would be sleeping in.

It’s not all bad though as the post does go on to say electricity, gas, Wi-Fi, water, and dishwashing liquid are all included and there appears to be a PowerPoint in the “room.”

Vacancy rates have dropped to 1.7 percent in recent months in Sydney, with the average rental price of $750 a week, $170 more than the Australia-wide average. Facebook

The space is also available immediately, so that’s a bonus, and with the rental market the way it is it will likely be snapped up pretty quickly.

Mind you, it isn’t the only tiny space to be put up for rent in Sydney of late, with a studio apartment – that doesn’t appear that much bigger – recently being listed at $628 a month in Newcastle, Australia that came with a microwave… above the bed.
