Henry Sandon’s love of ceramics even took him to work at the potter’s wheel. Quite early in his career he was tutored by my father, the potter Geoffrey Whiting, a formative experience he later recounted in a 2009 episode of the BBC’s Priceless Antiques Roadshow: “I was never very good, but what it did do was to teach me to appreciate a good pot … I’ve learned more from watching him making a pot than anything at all.” Henry went on to become a great champion of modern studio ceramics, collecting it avidly alongside historical pieces.
