School zone speeds could be lowered as Transport for NSW assesses the safety of child pedestrians walking to riding to and from school.
The state government has asked Transport for NSW to look into safety options for pedestrians near school zones, as new data shows that 25 per cent of students ride or walk to school every day in New South Wales.
The changes could include more safety infrastructure and reduced speed limits in and around school zones if it’s found that speed plays a part in road traumas.
Changes to school zones in an area of Box Hill are coming into effect in the coming weeks.
“Children are our most precious pedestrians and we want the safest possible environment for them to get between home and school,” NSW Minister for Roads John Graham said.
“Transport for NSW has been tasked with looking at the busy thoroughfares used by school children that are located close to school zones.”
Children could be left vulnerable when walking to and from school outside of school zones, the Minister’s office said.
Transport for NSW will consult with stakeholders when performing the audit, including talking with schools and local councils.
“The NSW Government is investing in safer walking and riding options, but if there is more that can be done, we will do it,” Graham said.
“School zones have proven very safe so this is a natural next step to look at safety nearby.”
