sydney hit by sudden flurry of hail as queensland set for drenching

A short burst of hail struck Sydney this afternoon, with some residents in the City’s west and southwest struck by the sudden squall.

A short burst of hail struck parts of Sydney this afternoon, with some residents in the city’s west and southwest struck by a brief storm.

The Bureau of Meteorology had initially warned of severe thunderstorms for much of the Sydney region, but that alert was later downgraded.

Homes in Sydney suburbs including Prestons, Greenace, Casula and Glenfield were all briefly hit by the hailstones.

“The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary”, the BoM said at 2:08pm.

Elsewhere in New South Wales, severe storms remained possible in the northeast, including the Hunter valley.

Heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hailstones remained possible along with severe storms.

Meanwhile in Queensland, the forecast for heavy storms remained across far north Queensland and the South East.

It is likely that hail could hit parts of Queensland as well, particularly in the Border Ranges and Granite Belt.

The BoM also issued 9 separate flood warnings for rivers across the state, including a final flood warning for the Daintree River and the Dawson River.

A tropical low-pressure system is also at risk of forming over the tropical sea,
